World Seafood Congress 2023

The 12th World Seafood Congress 2023 was hosted in Peniche, Portugal, between the 25th and the 27th of September, in cooperatian with the 13th International Conference on Molluscan Shellfish Safety. The event was hosted by the International Association of Fish Inspectors and the Instituto Politécnico de Leiria. The congress attracted 150 participants from 30 different countries, with countributions from organizations like Worldfish, DG SANTE, NOAA (VS), Thai Union and FAO.

Important topics included:

  • Technology for the circular economy
  • Upcoming Food safety hazards and risks in fishery and aquaculture products   (Vibrio, Toxines, …)
  • Molluscan Shellfish safety
  • The impact of microplastics
  • Traceability tools
  • Fraude in the international supply chain
  • Ethical matters like crews, human rights and animal

The congress included more than 50 papers and 20 posters, regional workshops, technical tours and networking events. It’s worth mentioning that Olivier Hottlet, Stijn Vandendriessche and Annelies Berx represented Hottlet Frozen Foods on this congress. The IAFI announced that the next World Seafood Congress will be held in Cochin, India, in cooperation with the Society for Indian Fisheries and Aquaculture.
